Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS
Background to our Hot Talks on Health with Baroness Barbara Young, this white paper outlines the reforms planned by the National Health Service (NHS) as it strives to reach its ambition to once again make the NHS the envy of the world. A blend of Conservative and Liberal Democrat ideas from the Cameron-Clegg coaliton government sets out the plans to achieve the following major goals:
• Patients will be at the heart of everything they do. Patients will be in charge of making decisions about their care.
• There will be a relentless focus on clinical outcomes. Success will be measured, not through bureaucratic process targets, but against results that really matter to patients, such as improving cancer and stroke survival rates.
• The reforms will empower health professionals as well as patients. Healthcare will be run from the bottom up, with ownership and decision-making in the hands of professionals and patients.
