Prof. Julia Abelson on PANORAMA’s promising start & public engagement trends
In this video interview from the Sept. 29-30th kick-off of the Panorama panel, Prof. Julia Abelson from McMaster University’s Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis says the Foundation’s clearly defined and planned approach to public engagement bodes well for the impact of the panel’s future contributions. She also gives context, saying the standing panel exemplifies and fits with current trends towards “deliberative dialogue” – a process which better prepares citizens for deep reflection on issues. Abelson cautions, however, that the field is still a “work-in-progress”. She says little research exists on how engagement changes citizens, but many express a desire to keep putting their new-found knowledge and thinking to public good.
